DIY Bangs
We love bangs. But keeping them pretty between haircuts can be hard. And if you have them, we bet you've trimmed them yourself on more than one occasion...
We asked New York hairstylist Stephen Ramsey how to take care of touch-ups.
First off, you'll need a plastic comb, like Goody Simplicity Comb, $2, and scissors. You can get good ones for around $20 at a beauty supply store (like Ray's Beauty Supply, 800-253-0993).
Shampoo and dry before you start. Wet hair stretches, so your bangs may be shorter than you expected once they shrink to their normal length.
Wispy bangs should be gathered in a triangle at the middle of your forehead before snipping no more than a quarter inch off the bottom. Then, to get the fringy effect, make a few mini-snips holding the tip of the scissors vertically instead of horizontally.
Blunt-cut bangs should be combed down and cut straight across. Start mid-forehead and work your way to one side. For the second half, start from the outer end of your bangs (by your ears) and cut toward the middle. This will keep them in line.
If you plan to have bangs for a while, check out the Fringe Kit, $40, 877-FRINGE1. Along with bang-trimming necessities like scissors and a comb, it also includes a roll of guide tape (to help you find the perfect length) and a handy how-to-style booklet. Just think, if you get good at it, you can charge your friends for your services.
