Fighting the Frizz
ym beauty intern Alina Dizik was determined to keep her curly hair frizz-free this summer. So she got advice from the experts....
Help! That's what I scream every time I look in the mirror and see my frizzy mess. I've always been the girl with big, unruly hair, and each time I tried a new product I would be disappointed because they would never get rid of the fuzzy cloud of curls on my head. I was constantly envious of the girls with perfectly stick-straight locks. I imagined their summer beauty routines to be stress-free, but then I discovered that humidity makes even straight hair curl. I refused to spend another season with my hair tucked under a baseball cap, so I asked the experts for advice....
The Tips
"Dry hair gets frizzier during humid weather," explained ym Assistant Beauty Editor Beth Shapouri. She suggested I use a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner, and then layer on silicone-based products like styling creams and serums to keep the frizz away.
ym Beauty Editor Cindy Fedida warned that fine hair can look limp from using too many styling products. To help fine hair appear smooth without being weighed down, she told me to skip the roots when applying product.
Cindy also said the best way to avoid frizz and get more control is to apply styling products on sopping wet hair instead of waiting until it's dry. Applying silicone serums to wet hair dilutes the product and prevents hair from looking greasy.
Amy Farid, a hairstylist at Bumble and bumble, explained that when there is humidity out, "it's like misting your hair with a bottle of water. That will make your hair revert back to its natural condition." Her tip? Use water-soluble, moisturizing styling products during the heat. For examples, click here.
I wrote down all the experts' advice, raided the ym beauty closet, and tested dozens of anti-frizz products. Now I think I've finally found just the right combination of conditioners, creams, and serums to keep my hair sleek and smooth all summer long. Here's how I use them:
The Ritual
I wash my hair with Pantene Pro-V Smooth and Sleek Shampoo, $4, and follow that with Aveda Rosemary Mint Conditioner, $13.
When my hair is still damp, I apply Biolage by Matrix Hydro-foaming Styler, $13, from roots to tips. Then I blow-dry, using a diffuser.
When it's almost dry, I rub a little Biolage by Matrix Gelee, $13, between my palms and put it on my hair to catch flyaways. I finish off with a spritz of Sebastian Shaper Plus Hair Spray, Styling Mist for Super Hold and Extra Control, $13. Voila!
