Oral Sex Safety
Is it safe to give oral sex? Can you get pregnant that way? Is there some kind of protection I can use to make it safe?
No, you cannot get pregnant from oral sex. In order for an egg to be fertilized, sperm needs to enter the vagina. However, just because you can't get pregnant from oral sex doesn't mean that it's a risk-free act. Many sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be passed through oral sex, including herpes, hepatitis, and HIV/AIDS. The best way to protect yourself during oral sex is to always use a latex barrier that means condoms or dental dams. (A dental dam is a square of latex often used by dentists during dental procedures.) And you should make sure that the condom (which covers the penis) or dental dam (which covers the vaginal area) is placed over the genital area before you engage in any oral sex. Oral sex is an intimate act, and if you decide to do it, you may experience many of the emotions and risks that are associated with intercourse. That's why it's important to protect yourself against diseases, as well as prepare yourself for any feelings you might have.
