Get him an experience, instead of a thing. That way, it's not like, "Here, have this box and I'll watch you unwrap it and if you don't show you love it I'll be hurt." That's a lot of pressure. So buy the two of you passes to the water slides, or go hiking. If he's more the sit-and-talk type, take him to a swank place for dinner - you know, where they actually come to your table. Besides making him happy, you're giving yourself a gift, too.
