Donald Faison Heads Uptown
How did you get the part [of Huey, the A&R talent scout] in Uptown Girls?
I think I was the first person cast. I was at an Oscar party, and Boaz [Yakin, the film's director] was like, "If I take this movie, I want you to do it." I thought he meant it, but you never know. A couple of months passed and he was like, "So you ready to do it?" And that's how I got the job. And that was the first time I'd been offered a movie.
What attracted you to the role?
The fact that I could be Puff Daddy! I get the opportunity to be P. Diddy, all the bling-bling, all the fame to walk outside and feel like I ruled the world. He's the blueprint of what an A&R scout can be. I really wanted to meet Dakota [Fanning], too. I saw I Am Sam, and I thought she was great, and I wanted to meet somebody who was that young and who was that aware of what she wanted to do and aware of her talent. When I was that age, I wanted to be Spiderman!
Was she what you thought?
Yeah, but she was still a kid, you know what I mean? And that's great, that's a gift. I think we're all born with gifts and when we're younger, our parents either steer us away or toward our gift. She's lucky, her mom was like, If this is what you want to do, go ahead and do it.
You've been working for years and it's really all coming together for you now. What's that like?
It's great. It's funny that you say that because I still don't think I've arrived yet. I'm everywhere because of her [motions to his publicist]. She does a good job. I think I could do a lot more!
You and Brittany are old Clueless friends. How weird is that?
It's great. She's developed, right? She's blown up; she's amazing.
Is it like you've been through it together and just kind of laugh?
It surprises me; I didn't think I'd get this far...yeah I did, I'm not gonna lie to you. It is great to see somebody you started out with there with you. That's really cool; I don't think a lot of people get that. I wonder if Sean Penn and Nic Cage look at each other and go, "Yo dude, you didn't even have a line in the movie! Look at us!"
Can you give us a little preview of the next season of Scrubs?
Um, it takes place in a hospital...I have no idea what happens, to be honest. Scott Foley's back, that's all I can say.
Why do you think Scrubs has been so successful?
I think it's the writing. It's very fast-paced, very funny, and it's refreshing. There's no laugh track on the show. We're not trying to tell the audience when to laugh. We've been very lucky.
What's the difference between filming TV and movies? Do you like doing both?
I love doing both! I love the fact that I'm able to do both; I'm very lucky that I have that opportunity. Uptown Girls shot during the summertime, and it took three months to make. Scrubs shoots in the winter, and it takes six months to make. You come back half a year later to do it again.
