15 Minutes With Chris Masterson
He plays screwed-up Francis on Malcolm in the Middle and this month stars in MTV's version of Wuthering Heights. So many questions, so little time.
What's your character like in Wuthering Heights?
I play Edward, a re-creation of the character Edgar from the original novel. Ours is done present day on the ocean somewhere. Edward's rich, accomplished, and very much in love with Cate (Erika Christensen). She's in love with Mike Vogel's character, Heath, and sort of falls in love with my character, too. Explosions occur.
It's on MTV, but is it a musical?
It's musically driven. Edward plays the cello. Johnny Whitworth's character, Hendrix, is very into punk, and Heath sings.
Do you have any music experience?
When I was a kid, I did musicals. Then I went through puberty and it didn't sound the same. I thought, Maybe this isn't the best bet for at least the next year. Since then, I play guitar and I write songs, but I don't really have time to go play out with a band. But I really, really love it, so maybe at some point I will.
What sort of music do you write?
It's technically a bit singer-songwriter-y, but whenever I use that term it makes me think of the guy who's crying when he's playing his songs. It's not so tissue-box driven. The style changes depending on my mood. Some of it's a little bit folky, some of it's a little bit rock. It sort of goes all over the place.
Do you ever find yourself singing in the shower?
I do a lot of my best singing in there! I sing Sinatra, Jeff Buckley, even some Richard Marx from time to time.
Growing up, were you as much a delinquent as your character Francis is on Malcolm in the Middle?
I think if I'd had more time on my hands, I would have gotten in more trouble, but I was working a lot. When I started, I would ask myself, What would I have done in that situation on my worst day when I was 14 or 15 ? But the character's getting older and now has responsibility for the first time. He's farming on a dude ranch, firing people, and making sure it runs right. He's becoming more of a man that's fun because it's not like playing the same character for five years over and over. He's evolving.
What were you like as a kid?
I played Little League when I was really young and played football for one season when I was 8 or 9. But now I surf, rock climb, race cars, and snowboard.
It seems like you're really on the adventurous side. Have you had any dangerous job hazards that you had to learn how to do for a role?
Yeah, I did a pirate movie called Cutthroat Island and I was bitten on the face by a monkey, attacked by a horse, and electrocuted.
Ouch! What's the weirdest place you've been asked for an autograph?
In the men's room. But recently I was in Las Vegas and a bunch of girls were doing a scavenger hunt and had to get a celebrity autograph, so I wrote my name on a girl's arm.
