Three to Watch
Meet Ciara, Sarah Hudson, and Teedra Moses. They're about to blow up your stereo.
Sarah Hudson Why You'll Want to Know Her: This 23-year-old singer-songwriter from L.A. may have a few famous relatives (her dad founded the 1970s supergroup the Hudson Brothers, and her cousin is Kate Hudson), but her self-branded "confessional pop music" makes it clear that she's riding on no one's coattails.
The Next Fiona Apple? From bold lyrics like "I'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown" to quirky boasts like "I've always slept with the captain of the football team. It was lame," Sarah's songs are totally autobiographical. "I've been in therapy since I was 12, so I've always been really comfortable putting it all out there and expressing myself. Creating the album was very therapeutic for me."
Or Maybe J.Lo: You can't say that Sarah doesn't have lofty ambitions. "I want to make millions of records and be in movies and have a clothing line and I want to just do everything. That is my ultimate fantasy. But I think most importantly, I want people to think that I have a passion about what I'm doing and that there's a message to every record I put out."
Ciara Why You'll Want to Know Her: The 18-year-old from Atlanta is the first female singer to ever record a "Crunk and B" song. For all of you who are thinking "crunk and wha?," that's the style of music invented by Dirty South producer Lil Jon and adopted by Usher in his single, "Yeah." Get it?
The Next Janet Jackson? With her tight abs, long hair, and amazing choreography in her latest video "Goodies," Ciara just might be the heir apparent to Ms. J. She certainly has the training for it. "I love to dance. I actually was a cheerleader throughout high school so I'm really athletic. I also used to model. When I realized that I had a unique sound as a singer, I figured I could put the dancing, music, and image all together."
Or Maybe Lauryn Hill: Don't be fooled by her single's sexy overtones. The song actually has a strong message for girls. "I really wanted the song to be about girl empowerment. Basically I'm saying that men can't buy us. Just because a guy has the iced-out Benz and the 22s, doesn't mean that he can expect girls to give it up. These goodies stay in the jar."

Teedra Moses Why You'll Want to Know Her: Straight out of New Orleans, this twentysomething talks about love, love, and more love in a way that every girl can relate to on her soulful, hip-hop-flavored debut, Complex Simplicity.
The Next Beyoncé? Teedra doesn't think so, "I love to look and sound different from anyone else." But we don't think the comparison is that out of line when you consider her flirty soprano voice, 1980s-inspired sound, and glamorous sense of style. The former fashion stylist lists divas like Gwen Stefani and Pat Benatar as sources of inspiration.
Or Maybe Raphael Saadiq: While most singers are content shining in the mainstream spotlight, Teedra would like to eventually explore her talents behind-the-scenes as a producer and songwriter. "I like to feel in control of what I'm doing. I don't want to have to worry about making music to fit whatever is popular at the moment."
