How to Throw the Most Awesome Slumber Party Ever
The Sleepover is about four soon-to-be freshmen girls who bond and learn life lessons at a wild slumber party turned mischievous scavenger hunt. It's no surprise that the movie's stars, Alexa Vega, Scout Taylor-Compton, Mika Boorem, and Kallie Flynn Childress, bonded (and made a little mischief of their own) while filming.
"The first couple of weeks of shooting are really intimidating, especially when you don't know anybody. So I was like, 'Okay, we're going to have sleepovers from the start, and that way we can all bond,' " says Alexa, 16. Nearly a year later, the girls are experts at the art of throwing a slumber party. So naturally, we hit them up for a few pointers. Break out your pens and notepads, ladies...
1) Plan the perfect guest list.
"The most important thing is to invite your closest friends," says Mika, 16. That way you don't have to worry about those embarrassing Polaroid pictures coming back to haunt you. You know, the ones of you wearing a frozen bra! "When your best friends are around you, you're not afraid to go all out and have fun. If you have a dare, like 'Get up and do the chicken dance,' you won't be afraid to do it because you're amongst friends," says Scout, 16.
2) Remember that location is everything.
Sure, you can party the night away in your bedroom (yawn) or crash in your living room (snore), but it's much cooler to have your sleepover in a more unexpected place like the backyard. "I like to sleep outdoors. I think it's much more fun and an interesting twist on the slumber party," says Alexa. She recommends getting a few paintball guns ("but I'm a tomboy") and a tent to protect you from the elements.
3) Download music you can bang your head to.
"You definitely need some good, upbeat music," adds Scout. Alexa suggests REO Speedwagon, Blink-182, and the Steve Miller Band. While Scout, Kallie, and Mika recommend Allister, the band that supplied the music for The Sleepover. "It's perfect to dance to," says Scout.
4) Have a good scare.
When in doubt, always remember that a spooky prank can bump the party up a notch. That's what happened when Kallie, 16, had a few girls over to her house and watched Children of the Corn. "We have a cornfield right across the street from our house. Afterward, we were playing truth or dare, and they dared me to go into the cornfields. It was probably around midnight. I go into the cornfield only to find that my friends snuck around the back to scare me. I bolted back to the house and locked the door and was screaming."
5) Skip the diet food.
Pigging out on everything from pizza to ice cream to buffalo wings is half the fun of a good sleepover. So let go of your low-carb obsession (at least for one night), because the girls recommend lots of yummy sugary stuff. "You've got to have Red Vines candy. They're sooo good. And my friends and I love to make Slushies in all different flavors," says Alexa. "Don't forget the popcorn, that's a basic," adds Mika. We'll bring the extra butter.
