What's Hot This Week April 1, 2008
Book:
Amy Amy Amy: The Amy Winehouse Story by Nick Johnstone. Published by Omnibus Press
Amy Winehouse has made such a huge impact, it's hard to believe it was only a few years ago that she was a total unknown. If you're fascinated by this edgy, interesting artist, read this brand-new book by British journalist Nick Johnstone, which covers her career and often-troubled life.
Music:
Ferras Aliens & Rainbows
Up-and-coming pop star Ferras has already achieved plenty of success, even though his new album, Aliens & Rainbows, only drops this week. He was chosen to go on tour with A Fine Frenzy; his song Hollywood's Not America was picked to play American Idol's Hollywood segments; and he performed at the superhot music industry conference SXSW in Austin. His music's great, and oh, yeah, he's cute, too. Consider us fans.
DVD:
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter star in this edgy, bloody, quirky musical (!) love story. If you missed it in theaters, get it on DVD now.
Movie:
Leatherheads
Renee Zellweger is in the enviable position of having two adorable guys fight over her (George Clooney and The Office's John Krasinski) in this comedy, set in the 1920s. Clooney also wrote and directed the film, which is charming, old-fashioned, and fun.
Soundtrack:
My Blueberry Nights
Director Wong Kar Wai's latest film, My Blueberry Nights, opens this week. It stars Jude Law and Norah Jones, along with Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman. The soundtrack is as amazing as the cast, filled with tunes from Jones, Cat Power, Cassandra Wilson and others. Explore more at www.myspace.com/myblueberrynightssoundtrack.
TV:
The Degrassi Spring Break Movie
On Friday night, The N airs this long-running show's spring break flick. As usual, the series is willing to take risks and show edgier, more realistic plotlines than most other shows aimed at teens. It's well worth watching.
