In the Spotlight
First she was famous for partying hard and having rich parents. Now Paris Hilton has gone from simple "hotel heiress" to television star (Fox reality hit The Simple Life), up-and-coming pop singer (expect a debut CD from Paris by year's-end) and aspiring actress (she's already scored roles in House of Wax and Pledge This!). And if that weren't enough, she added jewelry designer and author to her list of credits with the release of her autobiography, Confessions of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose and a self-named jewelry line. Our Patty Adams chatted with Paris about fame, family, and Tinkerbell.
Have you always been a creative type?
Yeah, when I was younger I planned to be a veterinarian. So I started making my dog clothes and not everybody does that. I never made a line, because I was just doing it for my dog. Now everybody does that, but they didn't do that back when I was 10 years old. I would literally go and sew everything up in a machine and then put diamonds on it, not real diamonds but like plastic ones and feathers.
That kind of explains why you're such an animal lover now.
Yeah, I'm a big animal lover. Tinkerbell is my life. She comes with me everywhere. I also have a ferret named Dolce & Gabbana. Ferrets are illegal [in New York], but whatever. I just bought a bobcat yesterday. She's a little girl. I have rats, snakes, and a bunch of other animals, too, like cats and an iguana.
What do you think you would be doing if you didn't have your career?
I would work at a pet store. I love pet stores I want to buy one.
Well it sounds like you practically have one already! I heard The Simple Life has been picked up for a third season. Do you know what it will be about?
I haven't signed on, so I'm not sure what we would do. It would be fun to go to Europe and backpack. That would be cool.
Did the show ever make you wonder what it would be like if you had to try and live life without all these luxuries?
I actually pay for everything. I don't get any money from my family. A lot of my friends come from money and just never worked a day in their life and they're 25 now and still haven't. You can't be taken care of by your parents your whole life. It feels good to make my own money and not have to ask my parents for anything. I can buy whatever I want and not ask my dad for money. I like that.
What sort of a relationship do you have with your parents now?
My mom and I are best friends and my dad and I are very close. They're awesome, and they're really young, they're cool, and my mom is really funny. They're just cool to be with.
I know you topped Blackwell's worst dressed list one year. Do you care about stuff like that?
I try and just push all of that negative energy out of my life. I'm into Kabbalah now and I'm just keeping all the negative things away and they tell you just don't worry about it. Only have positive people around you and if you take in that negative energy it affects your whole life. That's why I don't even want to read anything anymore. I'll look at the magazines to see the picture, but if it says something bad I just don't even read it. Plus, I think if you're on the worst dressed list you're usually the best dressed. I don't know, people who are judging, I don't think they know what they're talking about.
Plus a lot of people imitate your look.
Yeah, when I talk to my friends, they are like, "There are so many Paris look-alikes around." Like girls who wear the short skirt with boots or extensions. There must be a lot of girls and then little dogs exactly like Tinkerbell with the blond hair and everything. So its kind of weird walking around L.A. I see a lot of girls who look like me. At least that shows people like the look.
